ChocolatRATED PG-13 Brief Sensuality/some violence Directed by: Lasse Hallstrom Written by: Robert Nelson Jacobs Starring: Juliette Binoche, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Carrie-Anne Moss, Lena Olin Its’ been awhile since I’ve went into a movie with good expectations, and comeout overwelmed. Chocolat did that for me. I had know idea this movie was going to be so good and so charming. A mysterious stranger, Vianne(Juliette Binoche) arrives with her daughter in a tranquill French town where she isn’t welcome and decieds to open up a chocolate shop. Binoche plays a almost goddess like woman, who works her magic(when I say magic, she’s not magical!) in her chocolate and have the town overcome by her confections. Even though this isn’t listed as a comedy, chocolat has a lot of laughs and charm to keep you watching. A stellar and talented cast also brings much enjoyment to the film. This is indeed a wonderful date movie and a movie that will somehow get into you-much like the chocolate does in the movie. Parting thoughts-even though this has been recognized and nominated as best picture for 2000, I do think it deserves this status, but doesn’t desrve best picture-but still lands on my top ten list for 2000. -John Steffens
